WHERE IMAGINATION STAYS

WHERE IMAGINATION STAYS

By CHANATHIP CHUENBUMROONG(ชนาธิป ชื่นบำรุง)

Where Imagination Stays

Childhood is often remembered through fragments: a beloved cartoon watched repeatedly after school, a toy displayed behind a shop window, a dream too distant to be owned, or a world imagined far beyond the boundaries of reality. Though time carries us forward, these memories remain quietly preserved within us, shaping how we see, feel, and dream.

In Where Imagination Stays, Thai contemporary artist Chanathip Chuenbumroong (Fat Fox & Moon) invites viewers into a world constructed from personal memories, childhood fantasies, and emotional experiences. Through his signature wood-carved characters, Fat Fox and Moon, the artist transforms recollections of youth into sculptural narratives that resonate with audiences of all ages.

At the heart of this exhibition is Moon, a character who frequently appears dressed as iconic cartoon heroes and fictional figures from the artist’s childhood. These characters represent more than nostalgic references; they embody dreams that once felt unattainable. As a child, Chanathip admired these toys and characters from afar, imagining worlds he longed to enter but could never fully possess. Years later, through wood carving, he reclaims those dreams by creating them with his own hands. Each sculpture becomes an act of rediscovery, an opportunity to revisit wonder, desire, and the limitless possibilities of imagination.

Alongside these playful transformations are works rooted in the artist’s personal experiences. Feelings of joy, loneliness, hope, uncertainty, and affection emerge through the expressions and interactions of Fat Fox and Moon. Rather than depicting specific events, the works translate emotions into visual stories, allowing viewers to connect their own memories and experiences to the narratives before them.

Wood, the artist’s chosen medium, plays a significant role in this process. Carved, shaped, and imbued with traces of the maker’s hand, each sculpture carries a sense of warmth and authenticity. The material itself becomes a vessel for memory preserving moments that might otherwise fade with time.

While deeply personal, the exhibition ultimately speaks to a universal experience. It reminds us that imagination is not merely a feature of childhood but a lifelong companion. The dreams we once held, the stories we invented, and the characters we cherished continue to exist within us, quietly informing who we become.

Where Imagination Stays is an invitation to return to that place—a world where toys possessed souls, adventures began with a simple idea, and anything seemed possible. Through the gentle companionship of Fat Fox and Moon, visitors are encouraged to reconnect with the child they once were and rediscover the enduring power of imagination.
